Zurburan’s St. Peter Nolasco Recovering the Image of the Virgin was getting ready for its close-up over the holidays at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
The very large painting has been off-view for some time while undergoing treatment in the Conservation lab. In the past year or so it has been cleaned of old discolored varnishes, overpaint and retouching by Daniela Leonard, a paintings conservator here on a fellowship funded by the Kress Foundation.
Daniela inpainted, or retouched within, the small damages and abrasions on the painting with stable and reversible conservation paints, before she moved on to an exciting new fellowship at the Art Institute of Chicago. All that remained to do for St. Peter Nolasco was to apply a final varnish and a bit more inpainting. Here the painting and lab evacuation trunks are readied for a brush coat of conservation-grade varnish.
Frisch’s Presents The Nutcracker. Which scene is your favorite? The Snow Scene is one of the most elegant moments, with dancers swirling and twirling to create a hurricane of snowflakes.
